How to Sell on Vinted – A Detailed Guide
The great thing about Vinted is that it’s really easy to use.
The app is easy to navigate and very user-friendly, so it doesn’t take too long to figure out how to do things.
However, if you’re looking to understand how it all works from the get go, here is an depth guide into getting set up and selling on Vinted.
How to Set Up Your Profile

When you are on the app, you’ll see a menu at the bottom.
Click on Profile, and you’ll find all the settings you can adjust.
- Click on ‘view my profile’, then the 3 dots in the top right, then edit my profile. Here you’ll be able to upload a profile picture and write some information in your ‘About Me’ section.
You could include information about the items you sell (e.g. Ladies clothing size 12), information about where your items come from (e.g. Smoke free/Pet free home) and when you will post sales (e.g. I do not ship with UPS / I only post on Thursday/Friday/Saturday etc). - Scroll down on your main Profile menu to settings and here you will find options for inputting your personal details, your bank details and postage settings (where you can exclude certain shipping providers).
- Back to the main profile setting, another thing you might want to consider changing is ‘bundle discounts’ where you can offer various discounts or turn off the option completely.
How to List Items
Listing an item is very straightforward, but first of all it helps to know what you can and can’t sell.
Though you can sell most clothes etc, it’s important to note that if you are selling beauty products/toiletries – you can only sell new and unopened products.
Obviously you’re not permitted to sell fake/counterfeit items, dangerous items etc either.
When you’re ready to list your item:
- Click ‘Sell’ (in the middle of the main bottom menu).
- Add your photos – remember to try to shoot in natural light if possible (or a well lit space) on a clutter free background. Take a few pictures from various angles.
- Add a title for your listing.
- In the description give a bit more information and be honest about any flaws or defects.
- Choose the correct category for your item.
- Choose the brand.
- Choose the appropriate condition of your item.
- Put in your selling price (Vinted will suggest a price based on other similar sales).
- Choose your parcel size (check the dimensions/weight requirements first).
- And then click upload.
How to Ship Sold Items
When an item has sold, you have 5 days to send it.
The sale amount will show in your pending balance, until the item is received by the buyer.
Pack up your parcel and print out the label or take it to the post office if using Royal Mail (don’t forget to upload a picture of your receipt as proof).
Once the buyer receives the item and clicks ‘everything is ok’, the money will be released to your Vinted balance which you can then withdraw or leave in your account and use to buy things.
Leave the buyer feedback and that’s it.
…it’s really straightforward. And if you’re unsure the app will notify you what you need to do as you go through the process anyway.

How to Withdraw Your Vinted Balance

As mentioned above, when you sell something the money goes into your pending balance.
When the buyer presses Everything is OK, your payment will become available in your Vinted balance.
You’ll then be able to click the ‘Withdraw to Bank Account’ button.
Vinted say that withdrawals may take up to 5 working days to appear in your bank account but I personally find it to be quicker than this.

What are the Fees for Selling on Vinted?
There are no fees for selling on Vinted which is one of the major draws of the platform.
There are listing upgrades available though such as Spotlight your wardrobe and Bump items.
How does Vinted Make Money?
As mentioned above, you can pay for some listing upgrades.
But if you are a buyer, you will pay a Buyer Protection fee.
You will see the Buyer Protection fee, added to the price of the item you’re buying on the checkout page.
How does Postage Work on Vinted?

When you are setting up your profile, you can specify which shipping methods the buyer can use.
If you leave all the options on, the buyer can choose their preferred method.
Postage is always paid by the buyer… and unless you opt for Royal Mail, you don’t need to pay postage upfront.
Once an item has sold, you have 5 days to send it.
Posting by Royal Mail
If the buyer chooses Royal Mail, you’ll have to pay the postage upfront.
This is because when the buyer pays, the sale amount plus the postage fee will be held in your pending balance until the buyer receives the item.
Take your item to the Post Office, pay for postage and keep your receipt.
Upload a picture of the receipt as evidence that the item has been sent.
Since you are technically out of pocket initially, I personally prefer to switch off Royal Mail as an option… it’s also an added inconvenience of having to go to the Post Office versus simply dropping a parcel off.
Posting by any other method
If the buyer chooses any of the other options, Vinted will issue you a prepaid postage label.
This means you’ll just have to print the label out and attach it to your parcel (then take to a drop off point), and won’t have to pay the postage upfront.
If you don’t have a printer, you can use the ‘custom’ postage option and buy postage directly from Evri/Yodel and use their print in store option instead (just check your local one offers the service first) – it’s also important to note that if you do use custom shipping, you’ll have to keep track of the tracking yourself should something go missing.
Can You Return Items on Vinted?
Yes, but there are of course some caveats.
- If the item is ‘significantly not as described’, you can return it and get a refund.
To do this, when you receive the item click the ‘I have an issue’ button.
You need to do this within 2 days of the item being delivered – so make sure you check your things over as soon as they arrive, otherwise the order will be automatically marked as okay and the funds will be released to the seller.
- If the item arrived damaged in transit, you need to contact Vinted to resolve.
- If the item doesn’t fit or you don’t like it – you can only return if the seller agrees to take it back.
Is Vinted Safe?
If you were to go by it’s Trust Pilot rating, you wouldn’t touch Vinted with a barge pole.
When I first tried out Vinted (probably not long after it was launched in 2008), I wasn’t very impressed.
If I didn’t have people asking to swap all my items (you can turn this option off in the settings now thankfully!), then I’d have trouble with the few sales I did make.
As a result, it wasn’t long before I left Vinted behind and went back to my trusty eBay.
…And I feel like my experience back then is a reflection of the current rating.
HOWEVER, I have to say since I restarted using Vinted in 2020 – I have had next to no problems (and I’ve made over 300 sales since then).
It isn’t as strict as eBay in terms of buyer protection (which means if a buyer is trying to pull a fast one, you’ve more chance of Vinted siding with you than you would on eBay)
…but I don’t think it needs to be either.
As a user both buying and selling, I find Vinted to be a less problematic and generally more friendly platform overall than eBay.
I haven’t had any parcels claimed to have not been received by a buyer.
And the one parcel that did get lost by Evri, – Vinted refunded the buyer and released the sales proceeds to me too – so no one lost out.
I’ve had no malicious feedback and no complaints that my items are not as described; something that has unfortunately become more regular on eBay.

Vinted Selling Tips
Sometimes Vinted can feel a bit slow and your sales can feel a bit stagnant.
When this happens, there are a few things you can try to get things moving and sell your items faster.
Bump Listings
Item bumps is a paid feature which allows you to push a specific listing to the top of search results.
It costs £0.95 for 3 days and you get access to analytics that show you how many people have looked at your item.
When you view your wardrobe, you’ll see a ‘bump’ button underneath each listing.
Spotlight
Another paid feature, wardrobe spotlight is similar to bumps but it promotes your entire wardrobe to users in search results which increases your visibility.
Again you’ll get access to analytics that show you item clicks, how many times your items have been favourited and how many followers you have gained.
It costs £6.95 for 7 days.
Increase Engagement
Building a community can be helpful because it establishes trust.
Like eBay, Vinted has a feedback system which allows buyers to rate their purchases.
The more positive feedback you have the better and the more likely someone is to by from you than someone with no feedback.
But it’s also good to increase your followers as when you upload new items, they’ll receive a notification that you have.
Some tips for improving engagement:
- When someone buys something, message them to say thank you and let them know when you’ll be sending their item.
- When the item arrives and they’ve clicked ‘everything is ok’, drop them a message to say thanks again and ask if they would mind leaving you feedback.
- Leave feedback for your buyers – they’re more likely to return the favour.
- If someone favourites an item you could message them with an offer price or tell them that you offer bundle discount for multiple purchases.
- Write in your profile about the types of items you’ll be uploading, how often you post etc – this will encourage people to follow you.
- Always keep conversations polite and friendly.
Good Photos
A good photo can make or break a listing.
You don’t need to invest in expensive equipment to get a good picture, particularly if you’re selling low value items.
Instead just ensure that you take pictures in natural light (or a well lit room if not possible) on a light coloured and clutter free background.
Don’t take pictures of your clothes scrumpled up, you don’t necessarily have to iron everything but smoothing out the item by hand can make it look instantly more presentable.
And obviously don’t be misleading – photograph stains and flaws clearly so the buyer knows exactly what they’re getting.
Price Appropriately
Remember that you are selling secondhand items.
While some things might be worth paying more for, they shouldn’t cost as much as if you were buying new.
Think about what the item would be worth to you as a buyer.
Leave some wiggle room for offers and discounts if the item doesn’t shift, but don’t overprice your items.
Send Offers
If someone favourites your item, you’ll get a notification.
And if you click on this notification you’ll see a ‘make an offer’ button.
Whilst you won’t always successfully sell your item by making an offer (I personally see around 1/10 success rate), sometimes a small discount is all that the person is looking for.
Bundle Discounts

Vinted allows you to set up your profile so that buyers can request to buy multiple items from you, and receive a discount for doing so.
To choose your discount percentages, go to:
> Profile
> Bundle discounts
Here you can turn it on and set the rates for buying 2, 3 and 5 items.
When a person requests to buy a bundle from you, you just have to select the parcel size (make sure you check the rate allowances so you don’t under/over charge the buyer postage) and then they can pay it and you ship the items together in one package like any other order.
List Regularly
When you search for an item on Vinted, your search results are displayed to show the most recently listed items first.
If you haven’t made any new uploads for a while, your existing listings will be pushed further down the search results.
So to increase your visibility, upload new items.
Don’t forget that your followers will be notified when you do as well.
Refresh Old Listings
If some things are just not going, take a look at the listing and ask why.
Would you buy this item yourself? Is there something about the picture that puts you off?
Are you leaving important information out of the listing?
Go over each item with fresh eyes and update anything you think can be improved upon.
If they still don’t go, try lowering your price.
Failing that, you may want to consider removing the listing and donating to charity if you’re keen to just get rid.

Other Apps to Sell Clothes
If you’re looking for other apps like Vinted here are some you could try:
- Depop
- eBay
- HEWI (Hardly Ever Worn It) – for buying and selling designer clothing and shoes.
- Vestiaire Collective (another place for buying and selling designer items).
- Mercari (US only)
- Poshmark (US, Canada and Australia)
Vinted vs Ebay
As a long time eBay fan, I’d always considered myself loyal to them.
Nowadays though, I find myself gravitating toward Vinted.
So which is better?
Each have their own pros and cons but here are my general thoughts:
- Vinted is better for lower value items as the fees you incur on ebay limit the amount of profit you take away.
- Vinted doesn’t charge the seller fees, eBay charges fees on both the item and the postage charge.
- Vinted is more user friendly and the postage process is simpler.
- Ebay is still the market leader and your visibility will be much greater there.
- More unique and higher value items will likely fetch a better price on ebay, even taking fees into consideration.
Vinted vs Depop
Depop is much ‘trendier’ than Vinted. It’s where the fashion bloggers flock to sell their cast offs and has a cooler vibe about it.
If you are into fashion, you’ll likely make more money selling on Depop.
However, Depop does charge the seller fees.
Summary
Is Vinted Worth it?
Definitely! Vinted plugs the gap that ebay created by hiking final value fees on sales prices and postage.
Where ebay has alienated users who have low value items to sell, Vinted has offered them a platform to still make money from their old things, even if they’re not worth very much.
By the time you take off fees on a £1 item sold on eBay, you’re left with a meagre ‘profit’ of £0.16 (even less if you consider packaging costs, printing, fuel etc)
As Vinted doesn’t charge the seller fees, you get the whole £1 (less the cost of packaging, printing etc).
The uploading process is much simpler, the postage process is more straightforward and it feels like a more user-friendly platform all round.
Of course there are also areas where Vinted doesn’t measure up to eBay but overall, selling on Vinted is definitely worth a try.
